In this course we will look at intersections of art and political radicalism in U.S. culture. Apropos of the title's double meaning, we will approach the topic from two directions. On the one hand, art's potential to be politically radical: ways in which works of literature, visual arts, and performing arts can mobilize medium-specific resources, generic conventions, and stylistic devices to promote sociopolitical change. In this vein we'll examine how avant-garde innovations as well as traditional and popular forms can operate to strip cultural institutions of their "natural" quality and encourage an audience to change or abolish them. On the other hand, political radicalism's potential to be artistic: ways that radical political movements in U.S. history have drawn on individual art works or schools of art for inspiration, grounded their politics in aesthetic theories, created art to propagandize, or incorporated art into acts of protest and civil disobedience. Exploring these junctures of art and radical politics will, hopefully, enrich our perspective on each.
