Contents, comment

Our guest lecturer Mrs Rahla Rahat is a lecturer at the Institute of Social & Cultural Studies (ISCS), University of the Punjab, Lahore.

Course description:
There is a high demand in both the private and public sectors to develop infrastructure for energy, transport, and water management. While this is integral to poverty alleviation and overall economic progress of a country, there are negative effects created by land acquisition and displacement. Displacement is seen around the world as a human rights issue as project affected people need special attention in terms of their livelihoods restoration, equitable compensation package, and addressing issues of socio-cultural loss during the process of resettlement in new areas.
This course explores the issues of development-induced displacement through a sociological lens. The course will provide an understanding of problems faced in developing countries as they develop their infrastructure, introducing key concepts and practice of development-induced displacement and resettlement. This course aims to generate discussions on the larger concepts of development-induced displacement and resettlement.
The course will mainly focus on the following broad areas:
1. Introduction: Development and Displacement
2. Displacement, Equity, and Development
3. State, Politics, Ethics and Rights of Displaced People
4. Role of International organizations in development induced displacement
