Der Kurs beginnt mit grundsätzlichen Überlegungen zur Frage, worin die menschliche Sprache sich von anderen Zeichen- und Kommunikationssystemen unterscheidet. Dabei werden wesentliche Aspekte moderner Sprachtheorien erörtert. Anschließend werden die einzelnen Beschreibungsebenen der Linguistik behandelt: Die Lautstruktur der Sprache (Phonetik und Phonologie), die Strukturen von Wörtern (Morphologie und Lexikologie), Sätzen (Syntax), sprachlichen Bedeutungen (Semantik) und sprachlichen Handlungen (Pragmatik). Dabei geht es immer um den Vermittlung der jeweiligen Beschreibungs- und Analyseverfahren, der theoretischen Kenntnisse und der Besonderheiten der deutschen Sprache im Verhältnis zu anderen Sprachen der Welt. Ein übergreifendes Thema ist der Sprachwandel. In der Vorlesung wird der Gegenstand systematisch aufgearbeitet; in den Tutorien werden die Beschreibungsverfahren eingeübt.
