Nur in Ausnahmefällen versinnbildlicht eine Ortsbezeichnung so eindeutig "Herrschaft" wie im Falle Moskaus: Moskau als Kopf und Herz eines kontinentalen Riesenreiches, Moskau als Hauptstadt weißer wie roter "Zaren", Moskau - das dritte Rom. Der Grundkurs verfolgt den mittelalterlichen Aufstieg Moskaus von einer unbedeutenden Waldsiedlung zum wichtigsten Fürstensitz unter den Nachfahren Alexander Nevskijs bis einschließlich Ivan IV. (dem Schrecklichen). Das Hauptaugenmerk gilt dabei den Voraussetzungen, Bedingungsfaktoren und Entwicklungsetappen der Bildung eines zentralisierten Flächenstaates sowie der Herrschaftsform der Autokratie - mithin Faktoren, die Russland bis in die Moderne prägen sollten.
