Jedes Semester dieser viersemestrigen Geschichte des lateinischen Westens ist in sich abgeschlossen. Im Zentrum stehen die politischen und religiösen Zeichen-und Orientierungssysteme: Wie entstanden kulturspezifische semantische Formationen? Wie funktionierten sie, wer setzte sie gegen wen durch, wer pflegte sie und gewährleistete ihre Stabilität? Wodurch gerieten sie in bestimmten Momenten stärker als üblich in Unordnung, und wie vollzogen sich in solchen Momenten die kollektiven - in den Augen der Geschichtswissenschaft 'epochalen' - Umsemantisierungen? Unter dieser systematischen Fragestellung werden die 'klassischen' Themen jener Jahrhunderte bearbeitet: etwa die "feudale Revolution" (Duby) um das Jahr 1000, die Stadtentwicklung, neue Denkweisen der Gesellschaft, Berührung mit dem Islam und den Mongolen, religiöse Bewegungen, "Verstaatlichung" usw..
