This seminar is concerned with issues of qualitative methodology and its diverse research techniques in migration studies. This seminar is composed of two parts. In the first part of the seminar we will extensively discuss the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of qualitatively studying migration processes. In the second part we will review existing qualitative research on the processes through which people become "migrants", which entails issues such as how they come to undertake their migration, how they interact with sending and receiving societies as well as how they navigate their transnational lives.
The overarching goal of this seminar is to deepen existing knowledge of the epistemological foundations, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the unique qualitative perspective, which decidedly is a migrant-centered and bottom-up approach.
This seminar is directed at MA students. The participation in this seminar thus requires basic (BA level) knowledge on the methodology and methods of qualitative research and on migration theory/research.
If you are not certain whether your knowledge suffices to successfully participate in this seminar, please get in touch with me via email.
