Das Seminar beginnt mit diesen Fragen: Was ist Sprache? Was ist Sprachfähigkeit? Wie wird diese erworben?
Alle Menschen lernen im Normalfall unabhängig von gesellschaftlichen Einrichtungen die Grundlagen der Sprachfähigkeit. In modernen Gesellschaft reichen diese Fähigkeiten jedoch nicht aus, um den dort entstandenen sprachlichen Anforderungen gerecht zuwerden, so dass besondere Einrichtungen zur Sprachentwicklung – die Schulen - geschaffen wurden. In diesem Zusammenhang sind auch die insbesondere auf praktischen Erfahrungen basierenden Modelle der Sprachdidaktik entstanden.
Diese Modelle der Sprachdidaktik sollen nun daraufhin untersucht werden, welche Annahmen zu Sprache, Sprachfähigkeit und sprachlichem Lernen sie enthalten. Ebenso geht es um ihre Annahmen über die in der modernen Gesellschaft erforderlichen sprachlichen Fähigkeiten. Von hier aus sollen soll die Sprachdidaktik aus der Perspektive moderner Sprachtheorien kritisch betrachtet werden.
