Die Vorlesung beinhaltet alle Aspekte der Kultivierung von mikrobiellen Organismen (Fermentationstechnik). Sie beginnt mit einer Rekapitulation der wesentlichen Aspekte der Bilanzierung der Grundtypen von Bioreaktoren. Verschiedene Kultivierungstechniken, die im kleinen Maßstab in paralleler Form für Screeningzwecke eingesetzt werden, sind Gegenstand gründlicher Erörterung. Gängige Kultivierungsarten, die zu Hochzelldichtefermentationen führen, werden vorgestellt. Dies beinhaltet auch repetitive und kontinuierlicher Kultivierungsprozesse. Für die Anreicherung verbesserter Klone ist der Aspekt der Populationsdynamik in satzweise und kontinuierlich betriebenen Fermentern von Interesse.
Verfahren der Produktisolierung werden im Zusammenhang mit Kultivierungsprozessen angesprochen. Der Stoff der Vorlesung wird durch programmierte Korrelationen und Simulationen unterstützt, um ein Gefühl für die verfahrenstechnischen Zusammenhänge zu vermitteln.Das Seminar dient dazu, einzelne Aspekte der Fermentationstechnik auf der Basis zur Verfügung gestellter Literatur ausarbeiten zu müssen. Über diese Themen wird in Kurzvorträgen referiert und anschließend diskutiert, um einen kritischen Umgang mit der Materie zu schulen.
