Thomas Manns "Zauberberg" gilt als einer der wichtigsten Romane des 20. Jahrhunderts. Mit seinen Reflexionen über das Wesen der Zeit behandelt er ein zentrales philosophisches Thema. Mit dem Thema 'Krankheit' greift er physiologische und psychologische Debatten auf. Die Zeitgeschichte wird über die Lokalisierung kurz vor Ausbruch des 1. Weltkriegs eingebunden. Und ideengeschichtlich vertreten Naphta und Settembrini konträre Positionen zwischen Katholizismus und Freimaurertum.
Das Seminar zielt darauf ab, den Roman mit gründlichem Blick auf seine Kontexte zu erschließen. Es wird also gleichermaßen um eine genaue Textlektüre mit unterschiedlichen Schwerpunkten gehen wie um ausführliche Einblicke in die zeit- und ideengeschichtlichen Rahmenbedingungen. Darüber hinaus trägt der Vergleich mit Olga Tokarczuks Roman "Empusion" dazu bei, eine aktuelle Bearbeitung des Romans einzubeziehen – u.a. aus feministischer Perspektive.

Voraussetzung für die Teilnahme ist, dass Sie den "Zauberberg" vor Seminarbeginn vollständig gelesen haben. In der ersten Sitzung wird die Textkenntnis abgeprüft.
