Themes to be discussed:

  • In developmental psychology, what do we mean by risk and resilience? Looking at cases from Romanian orphanages, trauma from natural disasters or being born at risk (e.g low birthweight).
  • How do we conceptualize resilience as an outcome, a process, or a personality trait? Are you born resilient? Is it a skill that can be developed?
  • How do we empirically test for risk and resilience? In particular variable centered and person-centered analyses. How can we improve the current methodology used, particularly concerning how we look for gene X environment interactions and test for specific types of moderation effects (diathesis-stress, differential susceptibility and vantage sensitivity)?

In looking at these themes we will read and discuss work from influential researchers such as Masten, Rutter, Duckworth, Pluess, and Belsky.

What will students do as part of this module?

After learning about the potential topics, groups produce their own youtube video/science communication video.

Thus, the knowledge of the topics discussed in seminars is subsequently deepened by students producing short scientific videos (approx. 15 minutes) in groups (approx. 3 students).
"Hands-on" sessions and advice from those with technical know-how will introduce students to the topic of scientific communication and how to create and edit their videos.

What is expected? (see: Specification of the requirements)

  • Regular active participation in the seminar
  • Discussion of empirical articles in English
  • Participation in small group exercises and role plays
  • Recording of a scientific video
