The end of the 20th century saw the emergence of revolutionizing theories in the field of Cultural Studies, which dared to rethink and redefine the concepts of cultural belonging and practice. Such contributions served to better understand the dynamics of contemporary multi-ethnic communities, where the individual definition of cultural constructs gains meaning through human interaction. Taking an inter-American perspective, this course aims at mapping a series of theoretical approaches to ethnic and racial identity as they emerge in North American literatures. In the spaces of negotiation that African-American, Caribbean, Native American, and Chicana fiction provides, we will engage in a critical analysis of the politics of ethnic and racial representation in literary texts. Who speaks? What is being represented? Which cultural elements are in focus? With writers such as Sandra Cisneros, Sherman Alexie, Toni Morrison, Edwidge Danticat, Amiri Baraka, Afua Cooper, and many more, together we will navigate the intricate pathways of cultural representation.
