Datamining hat als Ziel die Aufdeckung und Nutzbarmachung von Regularitäten in meist großen Datenbeständen, wie beispielsweise Zeitreihen, Messdaten, Umfrageergebnissen, Kundendaten oder Dokumentensammlungen.

Die Vorlesung Datamining II setzt die in der Vorlesung Datamining gegebene Einführung in das Gebiet fort und geht auf neuere, wichtige
Datamining-Methoden ein. Zu den vorgesehenen Themen gehören Verfahren zur Extraktion von Regeln aus Daten, genetische Algorithmen, die Gewinnung graphischer Abhängigkeitsmodelle, Analysetechniken für wichtige spezielle Datentypen, wie Distanz- und Textdaten, Techniken der visuellen und auditiven Darstellung ("Sonifizierung"), sowie Skalierungsfragen beim Übergang zu sehr großen Datensätzen.
