231029 Representations of Britishness – using popular media and online resources to explore culture, language and identity in the UK (Stud.AG) (SoSe 2021)

Contents, comment

In this study group, we will explore British culture and language variety as well as Britishness / British Identity. We will become more familiar with British accents/dialects in various regions (e.g., Standard British English, Estuary English and other less mainstream accents) in order to broaden our knowledge about linguistic differences in the UK, drawing, for example, on the British Library’s online resources British Accents and Dialects. We will have fun phases in which we do our best to reproduce some accents as authentically as possible as well. In addition, we will focus on accents and dialects in TV series, in the speech of celebrities / media figures, vlogs, etc. The question of how Britishness is connected to British accents – for us and for Britons – is another area to explore.

23-ANG-IntH_a Internationalisierung at home - Ungraded examination Student information

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.

As this is a student-led study group and not a seminar, all the participants can and should help to shape the programme we will follow, and everyone will be expected to participate and to contribute. You will work in groups and get to know the theoretical basics of various British accents and dialects and apply your knowledge by presenting your results creatively and entertainingly!
