230277 Creative Speech Production (S) (SoSe 2024)

Contents, comment

Speakers can sometimes deviate from expected pronunciation patterns or produce novel phones or syllable structures. Such phenomena cannot be straightforwardly explained within existing theories of speech production, but we also have little knowledge about which contexts actually elicit such creative productions. This class will be a combined practical and theoretical seminar dedicated to creative speech productions from a phonetic and cognitive perspective. We will begin the class with reading theory and empirical papers tackling creative pronounciation variation. Based on these, we will derive one or several hypotheses, and develop designs for empirical production studies or corpus analyses, leading to small empirical studies, the results of which will be presented as part of the coursework. These studies can potentially be used as preliminary work for larger, subsequent projects on creative speech production.
