Die Vorlesung gibt einen Querschnitt durch die wesentlichen Prozesse der Ausbreitung der Organismen, die zu einer bestimmten Verbreitung der einzelnen Organismen führen. Die Areale sind außerdem Ausdruck der Evolutionsgeschichte. Die Floren- und Faunenreiche der Erde, grundlegende Prinzipien der Arealkunde, eine Übersicht der Zonobiome der Erde und die Frage der Biodiversität werden behandelt. Ferner werden Beispiele aus Mitteleuropa zur Floren- und Faunengeschichte erörtert, wie auch die Bedeutung für die Ausrichtung des heutigen Naturschutzes.
