230660 Images and Stereotypes of Latinos and Latin Americans in the Age of Streaming Platforms (BS) (SoSe 2022)

Contents, comment

Transnational Video-on-Demand (VOD) streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime and other local or regional platforms are increasing substantially the availability of fiction series and films from Latin America or about Latinos in the US and Latin Americans in general all over the world. While this is a significant advancement in comparison with previous international flows dominated by American and British media products, the question remains about whether the specific contents of these new programs and movies are an improvement on previous stereotypical representations of Latinos and of Latin Americans or if they are still reproducing and reinforcing them. This class will look at the main current series and films available in several transnational VOD platforms and will discuss images and representations of Latinos and Latin Americans from theoretical perspectives based on media and communication research.
