Official statistics report a rapid increase of hate crimes in Germany from 5.376 reported hate crimes in 2001 to 11.520 reported hate crimes in 2022. Moreover, self-report surveys show that a high percentage of experienced hate crimes are not reported to the police and official statistics underestimate the actual number of hate crimes. In light of an increasing occurrence of hate crimes and an ongoing discussion about measurement issues, the seminar focuses on the measurement of hate crimes from a sociological perspective.
The seminar is organized in three blocks: The first block covers an introduction to the definition, conceptualization, and development of hate crimes and will discuss different perspectives (e.g., legal, sociological, criminological) on the topic. The second block focuses on different methods to measure hate crimes. We will compare and discuss different types of data sources, items, and methods to collect and analyze hate crimes. Moreover, we will focus on different challenges (e.g., social desirability and ethical standards) in the measurement of hate crimes. The third block will include practical exercises using different datasets. In this block, the students will work in small groups or alone on different research topics in the field of hate crimes.
This seminar requires no prior knowledge. We will work with the statistical software stata. The seminar includes a short introduction to stata if necessary.
