Drawing on the rich body of Southern African creative writing in English, this seminar will address a selection of acclaimed writers and texts from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. While our main focus will be on South Africa, we will also discuss literature from Namibia, especially poems and plays. Throughout the seminar we will engage in close readings of genre(s) and literary form, the setting, the plot and character design, and combine this analysis with social, cultural, political and historical contextualisation.
Please note:
This course is linked to Prof. Dr. Anne Schröder’s class on “Southern African Englishes in Context” (Thurs: 16-18, 230089); and these two courses are designed to complement each other. We therefore strongly recommend participation in both classes.
