Das Seminar behandelt den Epochenumbruch um 1800 anhand von Erzählungen und Novellen. Es bietet zugleich – in Anknüpfung an das vorhergegangene Fachportal - eine erzähltheoretische und literaturgeschichtliche Einführung in die erzählende Dichtung (Gattung „Erzählung“ / „Novelle“) sowie in die Epochen der Aufklärung, Klassik und Romantik. Ausgewählt werden zentrale Texte der Literaturgeschichte um 1800, etwa Schillers „Der Verbrecher aus verlorener Ehre“ (1786), Goethes „Unterhaltungen deutscher Ausgewanderter“ (1794), Ludwig Tiecks „Der blonde Eckbert“ (1797), Kleists „Das Erdbeben in Chili“ (1807), „Die Verlobung in St. Domingo“ (1811) und „Der Findling“ (1811), Adelbert von Chamissos „Peter Schlemihl’s wundersame Geschichte“ (1813) und E.T.A. Hoffmanns „Der Sandmann“ (1817).
