In the late eighteenth century, a new set of ideas began to spread through Europe and beyond that was to significantly influence and alter cultural perceptions of literature, art, and nature. As one of the most influential epochs and art movements of literary history, Romanticism developed a powerful legacy that can still be felt today. Its key concepts and motifs continue to influence and permeate contemporary (public) culture and discourse regarding, for example, questions of individuality, emotion, and human attitudes towards nature and the environment.
This class will engage with the history, philosophy, and literature of Romanticism. We will focus on key authors and texts from late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century Britain and attempt to trace the afterlives of those writings in selected examples from contemporary fiction and film.
A reader with primary and secondary texts will be made available.
