230335 Spinsters, Bitches, Superstars - Women who Broke the Rules (S) (WiSe 2021/2022)

Contents, comment

  • Online, Asynchronous

Kamala Harris, Amelia Earhart, Edna Pontellier, Charlotte Perkins-Gilman: whether a product of imagination or a flesh-and-blood person, what these women have in common is that they transgressed social and cultural expectations of a women's role at their time. In smaller or bigger acts they rebelled against the normative definition of their gender role, re-interpreted what it means to be a woman and created their own rules for career and private life.

Investigated through the lens of Feminist Criticism, in this class we will discuss iconic female trailblazers, their motivations, actions, narratives and performances. We will mix US-American literary characters with historic personalities and popular culture celebrities, aiming at a broader range of lives and lessons to scrutinize.
