Das Seminar dient zur praktischen Anwendung der Kenntnisse der Quantitativen Methoden der Empirischen Sozialforschung. Dazu sollen empirische Daten gemeinsam ausgewertet und eigene Forschungsfragen entwickelt werden. Schrittweise werden Auswertungsverfahren und ihre Umsetzung mit Stata diskutiert und eingeübt, die in den Vorlesungen Statistik I und II vermittelt werden.
Der Forschungsgegenstand des Seminars sind Konzepte, Theorien, Methoden und empirische Befunde der Forschung zu Armut und sozialer Ungleichheit. Dazu werden unterschiedliche Definitionen und Operationalisierungen von Armut und sozialer Ungleichheit diskutiert und empirisch beleuchtet. Weiterhin werden sozialwissenschaftliche Theorien zur Entstehung, Dynamik und Änderung von Armut und sozialer Ungleichheit behandelt.
Als empirische Datenbasis werden das Sozio-oekonomische Panel und der Mikrozensus verwendet, die vielfach auch Grundlage der Armuts- und Reichtumsberichte der Bundesregierung sind.
