Decadence has been a notoriously difficult concept to define. Rooted in French arts and literature and connected to both Romantic and Modernist thought, the term has come to denote the endeavour to find artistic pleasure in transgressive issues such as sexuality, disease, materialism and deviance during times of perceived societal instabilty or change. In the context of fin-de-siècle Britain Decadent writers were often attributed with popular theories of degeneration and decay, since their foregrounding of marginalised and anti-mainstream positions, experimentation with style and break with traditions stood in contrast to bourgeouis notions of progress and morality. This seminar intends to provide an overview of the historical and artistic origins of decadent literature, introduce us to some of its most important texts and representatives, and explore the movement’s lasting aesthetic and cultural repercussions. The reading list will include texts by Oscar Wilde, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Arthur Machen, Edith Nesbit and others.
