231143 The Legacy of the 1980s in America: Exploring the Cultural Influences of an Iconic Era (StGr) (SoSe 2025)

Contents, comment

The 1980s shaped today’s world in ways we still see in music, fashion, politics, and technology. From the rise of global pop culture to major political shifts, this decade continues to leave its mark on contemporary society.

Our discussions will be grounded in Graham Thompson’s American Culture in the 1980s (2007), providing a solid academic foundation while allowing space for exploration and new perspectives. We aim to create a safe and welcoming space for open interaction, where everyone can share their thoughts and ideas freely. Together, we will look at the entire era through a contemporary lens, exploring not just what defined the 1980s, but also why these cultural shifts happened and how they continue to resonate today.

This study group offers an opportunity to rediscover an era that many of us didn’t experience first-hand but that still fascinates us today. Whether you’re drawn to the music, the political landscape, the fashion, or the cultural movements of the time, this is your chance to explore the lasting influence of the 1980s.
