Who does not know Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories about the famous detective Sherlock Holmes, the brilliant sleuth with his deerstalker hat and his pipe? Usually the stories are cherished for their suspense and their intricate crime scenarios. But they also contain various data about their contemporary times, Victorian issues and social conditions. Issues such as marriage, class, law, poverty, prostitution, sports, the type of the New Woman, etc. Sometimes these issues feature prominently in the narratives, sometimes only marginally. We will compile the data and complement it with thorough research and see what the stories tell us about the Victorians and their age.
We will begin with A Study in Scarlet, so you should have read the novel for the first seminar session.
