The term “integration” is contested in both policy and scholarly circles. In this class, we will unpack the concept and examine key differences between how it is understood by policymakers and academics. In this part of the course, we will study the various purposes of integration, including popular models used by governments in different regions of the world. In the next part of this course, we will consider the integration needs of a wide range of immigrants, including migrant workers, foreign spouses and refugees as well as the integration concerns in different host societies. In the final part, we will apply this knowledge to two disparate regions that host large numbers of foreign nationals and develop recommendations for policymakers to overcome integration challenges there.
- Regular attendance, preparation of mandatory readings and active participation
- Oral/video presentation (group activity)
