There is no doubt that the family of origin has long-standing influences on our own life course successes and failures, not least but not alone through the development of individual characteristic and behaviors that help to grasp chances and to master challenges over the life course. We learn in this seminar (1) what ‘family of origin’ might comprise – in terms of parental resources, behaviors, family structure, and biological heritage; (2) what mechanisms are at work to transmit family of origin influences on offspring’s life; (3) and how family of origin influences are mediated and moderated by the institutional makeup of a society.
