This course will focus on world Englishes through an examination of their culture, literature, and history. We will utilize all four important skills (speaking, listening, writing, reading) using newspaper and magazine articles, radio, television, and online sources to address language, culture, and historical and contemporary issues.
• Socio-Cultural objectives:
o To approach the English language and English speaking cultures
o To understand, analyse, and debate social and culture issues
• Pragmatic objectives:
o Summarize materials, present information verbally and in writing, express and qualify one’s opinion, debate
o Understand long form texts, videos, and audio files
o Selecting and organising ideas, presenting a structured presentation, write long texts in a clear and organised matter.
o Mastering language registers, understand and using idiomatic expressions.
• Grammatical points will be reviewed as needed.
Successful completion of a course rated C1 (or C1.1) or C-Test of the Language Center (for dates please see https://www.uni-bielefeld.de/einrichtungen/fsz/tests_and_certs/placement/).
