Wenn das 20. Jahrhundert ein weltweites „Zeitalter der Extreme“ war (Eric Hobsbawm), dann trifft dies insbesondere für seine erste Hälfte und erst recht für Russland zu. Politik, Gesellschaft, Wirtschaft und Kultur hatten sich in wenigen Jahrzehnten radikal verändert; die Welt um 1950 schien eine völlig andere zu sein als das friedliche und optimistische Europa des 19. Jahrhunderts. Die Erfahrung der Kriege prägte diese Wahrnehmung entscheiden – aber welche andere, möglicherweise wichtigere Merkmale der Epoche lassen sich nennen? Beide Veranstaltungen führen in die russische bzw. sowjetische Geschichte sowie in Fragestellungen der internationalen Geschichte ein.
