The aim of this course is to give you the analytical tools to analyse and interpret literary texts in the genres of drama (Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing) and verse (narrative poetry, e.g. Beowulf; and lyrical poetry, e.g. sonnets). As you see, our primary material will be mainly early modern (W. Shakespeare; Elizabethan/Jacobean lit).
Our discussions will be based on what you learnt or are currently learning in the BM2/Basis2 Introduction lecture, so connections between all three BM2/Basis2 courses will be made.
Beowulf, translated and introduced by Seamus Heaney, faber & faber, 2000 [extract will be provided]
William Shakespeare, Much Ado About Nothing, from the Arden, Oxford or New Cambridge Shakespeare series. [Please buy a copy. No school editions, no internet versions, no translations, please.]
Renaissance sonnets [will be provided]
