Für Rousseau und andere Philosophen der Aufklärung waren die pazifischen Inseln das Paradies auf Erden, von Schriftstellern (Stevenson, Somerset-Maugham, Melville) literarisch verarbeitet und von Malern (Nolde, Gauguin) eindrucksvoll in Szene gesetzt. Filme (Meuterei auf der Bounty) und Tänze (Hula) sorgten für die massenhafte Verbreitung eines Mythos, den die Anthropologin Margret Mead mit ihrer Dissertation über den "guten Wilden" wissenschaftlich untermauerte - bis der Ethnologe Derek Freeman den Mythos vor 20 Jahren mit seiner Botschaft vom "bösen schwarzen Mann" konterkarierte. Das Seminar will die Konstruktion und Dekonstruktion eines Mythos aus verschiedenen Perspektiven beleuchten und hinterfragen.
