The theory of Pierre Bourdieu is in many ways regarded as a theory of social reproduction of class status, which at first glance seems to put it at odds with notions of historical change and transformation. However, in recent years a closer and more sophisticated reading of Bourdieu’s work has increasingly highlighted the analytical utility of his concepts for historical analysis and underscored Bourdieu’s relevance as a historical sociologist. The course offers an introduction into Bourdieu’s theory from precisely this angle. It demonstrates how Bourdieu’s fundamental concepts such as habitus and social fields were in fact developed and whetted in analyses of social transformation and how in his view every sociological analysis generally calls for historical reflection. It furthermore shows how many of his lesser known concepts, such as “illusio,” “doxa,” or “symbolic revolutions,” bear a unique and as yet underutilized potential for historical analysis. The course aims to benefit both those new to and already acquainted with Bourdieu’s theory.
