In der heutigen Bildungslandschaft findet sich eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Kompetenzbegriffe, die von angeborenen Persönlichkeitsmerkmalen (z. B. individuelle Lernvoraussetzungen) bis hin zu (schulisch) erworbenem Wissen, von fächerübergreifenden Schlüsselqualifikationen (z.B. Methodenkompetenz) bis hin zu fachbezogenen Fertigkeiten (z.B. mathematisches Modellieren) reichen (vgl. Weinert, 2001).
Die unterschiedlichen Kompetenzbegriffe sollen zunächst definitorisch voneinander abgegrenzt und modelltheoretisch eingebettet werden, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf den schulischen Kompetenzbegriff (funktional-domänenspezifisch) gelegt wird.
Anschließend sollen Fragen der Messbarkeit von schulischen Kompetenzen im Rahmen der empirischen Bildungsforschung (wie bspw. bei international vergleichender Schulleistungsstudien) erörtert werden. Nutzen und Grenzen schulischer Kompetenzerfassung sollen anhand eines konkreten Beispiels (LAU – Erhebung am OSK) diskutiert werden.
