Demokratieförderung ist eine signifikante Komponente in der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit, auch wenn dies wenig in der Öffentlichkeit mit Entwicklungshilfe assoziiert wird. In 2018 umfasste die Demokratieförderung der OECD-Staaten 10% ihrer Entwicklungsausgaben. Gleichzeitig sind in den letzten Jahren Rückschritte in der Demokratisierung vieler Länder zu beobachten, insbesondere was die Wahrung von Grund- und Menschenrechten wie Meinungsfreiheit betrifft. Im Seminar werden zunächst entsprechende Entwicklungstheorien und Ansätze der Demokratieförderung diskutiert und die Akteure analysiert. Anhand konkreter Fallbeispiele aus Asien, Afrika und Lateinamerika wird in einem zweiten Schritt den Fragen ob und wie Demokratieförderung wirkt nachgegangen.

Für eine benotete Einzelleistung muss ein Referat und eine Hausarbeit im Umfang von ca. 15 Seiten geschrieben werden. Außerdem wird eine regelmäßige Teilnahme vorausgesetzt, da die Sitzungen aufeinander aufbauen.
Für eine Studienleistung ist ein Referat zu halten.
