This class presents a survey on a variety of approaches and methods applied to English as a foreign language at secondary schools. We will discuss the implications of teacher-oriented, student-centered and subject-focused approaches with their respective task designs.
As basic reading material, we will use chapters from a variety of books on these topics, and also classify, and criticize, different formats of tasks geared towards the development of competence-oriented sessions.
Beyond giving a survey of different language teaching methods to be practised at school, this seminar also offers a historical survey of teaching paradigms: from input-oriented, teacher-centred instruction in the first language to communicative, output-oriented, learner-centred social and intercultural interaction.
