Kaum eine Gesellschaftsformation ist mittlerweile so gut erforscht wie das Bürgertum des 19. Jahrhunderts. Ob man dagegen im 20. Jahrhundert noch von einem Bürgertum sprechen kann, ist bislang eher umstritten. Der Grundkurs will der Entwicklung des Bürgertums von seiner Formationsperiode am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts bis in die Gegenwart nachgehen. Dabei sollen wechselnde - und bleibende - Frontstellungen, Werthaltungen, Lebensentwürfe auf gesellschaftlicher, politischer und kultureller Ebene untersucht werden. Überdies wird der Grundkurs in Grundfragen, Methoden und Arbeitstechniken der neueren und neuesten Geschichte einführen.
