Child maltreatment refers to profound failures of caretakers to foster their children’s development. It includes acts of verbal or physical violence as well as the neglect of basic needs of the child. In countries that provide protection for victims of maltreatment about 1-4% of children are referred to social services because of the suspicion of severe abuse. However, surveys from different countries estimate that, across cultures, about one third of a population report maltreatment in childhood. Child maltreatment is associated with a risk for the healthy development on various areas of functioning, including attachment, threat processing and affect regulation, that may translate into psychopathology. The aim of the course is to summarize the evidence on the relationship between child maltreatment and psychopathology, to learn about potential moderators and mediators of this relationship and to present specific methods for treatment
