"The 'Women’s Right’s Movement' was and is very necessary, but what do you do when you have fought and won? History has done most of the work for us." (http://womenagainstfeminism.com/)
In this seminar we will look at women in power, from Boadica, Queen of the Iceni, who organised a large-scale uprising against Roman occupation in 60/61, to that Tudor anomaly, the female monarchs Mary I and Elizabeth I, to modern leaders like Margaret Thatcher, Queen Elizabeth II, Hillary Clinton and Angela Merkel. We will dig deep into prehistory and ask whether there is any truth to the myth of an ancient matriarchy and whether worshipping goddesses served a different function than serving gods. We will explore what happened to Mary, the Virgin, the Mother of God, in Protestant cultures and how the image of the wife/mother changed in early modern times. We will try to understand why Victorian society was so addicted to the ideal of the pure, innocent, civilising woman. This will lead us, if we're successful, to an understanding of postmodern patriarchy and the power wielded by its gender discourses.
