This seminar aims at providing an introduction to a variety of theoretical approaches practiced in linguistics as well as the differing methods used. This will include at least historical linguistics, structural linguistics, formal and functional theories, cognitive linguistics, and sociolinguistics, but the list may be expanded to cover such areas as logical linguistics or contrastive linguistics. The work of the seminar will include looking at important concepts (word, part of speech, sentence) and at the methods used to implement any given theory.
In order to get the full qualification (5 points), the following is expected of all participants:
1. Regular attendance.
2. Writing and submitting the essays assigned.
3. An oral presentation to be expanded into (4):
4. A written treatment of one of the topics suggested.
A literature / reading list will be provided.
