230637 English in the Information Society (S) (SoSe 2010)

Contents, comment

At the center of this seminar will be an exploration of situations of use of English as a language of wider communication, as a lingua franca, and as a “library language. That is, we will look at contexts of use and features of English in trade and commerce (esp. advertising and product information), in science and technology (with a look at terminologies and nomenclatures), in international academic publishing (print and electronic), and in more informal communication (blogs, chats, twitters, text messages, etc.).

Participants are expected to explore a particular area and to present their finding in the class. Credit will be given for both the oral presentation and the written assignments. A literature list will be supplied.
