Gender norms are highly relevant to teenage students and can therefore be a topic motivating them to speak in the foreign language. However, norms of gender and, closely interrelated, sexuality are also highly personal so in educational contexts we have to find ways of approaching this topic in a way that helps students to reflect on them without feeling exposed, e.g. at the example of fictional characters in literature or film. In order to prepare you to choose suitable material and methods, the course includes a brief introduction to gender studies and a discussion of what norms of gender and sexuality imply for the role of the teacher and for teacher-student interaction. Furthermore, we will try out different methods and approaches to teaching gender reflection. You will then apply your new knowledge and skills by presenting a lesson/workshop on gender/sexuality based on a text or an example of your choice.
