The idea to this seminar arose from the observation that, due to Covid-19, for once we may be able to relate to former times without first studying their historical and cultural context in detail. All of us have been living with the coronavirus pandemic for the last year, with face masks, lockdowns, restrained social life and more. This course wants to focus less on the apocalyptic dimension of pestilences and more on the measures taken and restrictions enforced to cope with the respective epidemics throughout different ages. It wants to look at the strategies to deal with fatal diseases. How do they differ in the various ages or to what extend are they very similar? We will start with Daniel Defoe’s account of the Great Plague in London in 1665 and close with contemporary texts on Covid-19 and thus cover a timespan of over 350 years of contagious diseases.
Texts for the course will partly be provided via the Lernraum or otherwise. But some of the works you will have to purchase yourselves (see: Literaturangaben). All texts must be read and prepared by the beginning of the seminar.
Please purchase the following:
Daniel Defoe, A Journal of the Plague Year (Penguin) € 8,99
Zadie Smith, Intimations (Penguin) € 5,98
