230584 English Language Teaching Methods (secondary school) (S) (WiSe 2021/2022)

Contents, comment

Please note: the seminar will most likely take place as a mixture of both: actual session at university as well as asynchronous/online parts. I will try to keep the seminar concept as flexible as possible to take into account your needs and wishes as well as the development of the pandemic. Let’s work together to turn this into a good experience for everyone.

As of now (July 2021), I am planning on doing the following:
we will have sessions at uni as well as sessions in which you will rather work on your own. I will be at our assigned room for (most of) these self-study sessions to answer questions or help you. You can also come to the room during those sessions or join online (which will also be possible throughout the semester).
We will meet at university for our first (Oct 20) and last session (Feb 2), and on selected dates (t.b.a.) throughout the term.

This seminar will serve as a first introduction to methodological approaches to teaching English as a foreign language. We will firstly focus on perspectives of the teacher, the learner as well as the curriculum when planning lessons. We will also address the planning process as such and how to work with learning objectives to structure your lesson planning. You will then get to know some of the most widely used methodological approaches to teaching English on a) a theoretical basis as well as b) with some practical ideas for the classroom. Throughout engaging with theoretical foundations and applications for your future teaching, we will particularly focus on making learning accessible for everyone – including the use of digital media.
