Der zweisemestrige Grundkurs beleuchtet das wechselvolle Verhältnis von Politik und Religion in den Gesellschaften Europas vom Ende des Römischen Reiches bis ins 20. Jahrhundert. Im Zentrum der Veranstaltung stehen die unüberschaubaren bildlichen, baulichen und textlichen Hinterlassenschaften dieses Verhältnisses. Im vergleichenden Interpretieren möglichst vieler sehr unterschiedlicher Einzelstücke soll das In-, Mit- und Gegeneinander von Politik und Religion über etwa 1500 Jahre europäischer Geschichte erarbeitet werden.
