This seminar investigates the pragmatics of complimenting across languages and cultures. It focuses on how the speech act of complimenting is intertwined with social norms, politeness, and face negotiation, as well as cultural values. Through theoretical readings, empirical case studies, and student-led discussions, the course explores how compliments function, how they vary across contexts, how they are influenced by social factors (gender, power dynamics, and culture), and how they are received, returned, or resisted. Students will critically analyse authentic compliment data, engage in cross-cultural comparisons, and reflect on their own practices.
