Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, den Studierenden das Arbeiten mit antiken Quellen näher zu bringen. Dazu werden wir uns mit den ethnographischen Autoren der griechischen Antike beschäftigen, besonders mit jenen, die zur Zeit der römischen Expansion und des Imperiums schrieben (darunter Polybios, Strabon oder Diodor).
Unser Interesse gilt dabei der Rolle, die ethnographisches Denken in den Werken von Historikern, Geographen u.a. spielte und wir werden versuchen, die antike Tradition ausgehend von Herodot zu rekonstruieren. Durch quellenkritisches Arbeiten werden so auch untergeordnete Fragen beantwortet werden können: Wie beschrieben die Griechen andere Völker? Warum verglichen sie sich stetig mit den ,,Barbaren"? Und welchen Einfluss hatte dieser Vergleich auf ihr Selbstbild und ihre Identität?

Latein-und Griechischkenntnisse wären hilfreich, sind aber keine zwingende Voraussetzung zur Teilnahme.
Als aktive Teilnahme erwarte ich ein kurzes Impulsreferat (ca. 5-10 Minuten), die Liste für die möglichen Themen finden Sie im Lernraum. Darüber hinaus sollten Sie mir jede Woche (bis Dienstag) ein, zwei Fragen oder Kommentare zu einem der Sekundärtexte per Mail zuschicken oder hier in den Lernraum stellen.
Da ich natürlich verstehe, dass immer mal etwas dazwischen kommen kann oder mal wenig Zeit da ist, können sie die Frage zu den Texten in je drei Wochen weglassen.
