300435 European Social Policy (30-M24) (S) (SoSe 2021)

Contents, comment

This seminar introduces students into the concepts, and contexts of social policies at the level of the European Union as a supranational organization. It attempts to discuss current and future development of EU social policies. We particularly look at the shape and adjustments of European social policies in contexts of global crisis situations having affected the EU and its member states substantially. These are the economic and financial crisis from 2008 onwards, the (to some extent connected) unemployment crisis, the refugee crisis from 2015 onwards, 'internal' legitimacy crisis of the EU, and the Corona crisis. Concluding we discuss possible future developments in EU social policies.

Requirements for participation, required level

You will need to have at least basic knowledge on social policy and on the European Union, as there won’t be space for long introductions into the basics.
The preparatory reading and any other material will be in English and may include secondary literature, as well as original documents, journal articles and other material such as films. The course language (lectures and presentations) will be in English as well. Therefore, a very good command of English is important for participating in the course.

I hope for a diverse group of students with different disciplinary and national backgrounds and international experience.

The seminar will be comprised of a mix between flexible learning units and zoom sessions. (No sessions in person!)

Bibliography

Literature and other material will be made available in LernraumPlus.
