This course will cover recent advances in the field of molecular ecology through the critical evaluation of articles reporting original research in the scientific literature. Molecular ecology is broadly defined as the application of molecular genetic tools to questions in ecology, conservation and evolution. We will cover various sub-topics including parentage analysis, behavioural ecology, molecular phylogeography, conservation genetics, ecological and landscape genomics, hybridization and speciation. Course participants should commit to reading each article before the class and be prepared to actively paricipate in group discussions. Students will be given two credit points for regular active attendance, presentation of an article as a short semimar, and a written critique of the article.
