230536 Social and Cultural Studies: Britain, Group B (S) (WiSe 2009/2010)

Contents, comment

In this course, we look into the most important recent developments in British society, politics, and cultures. Each of the topics provides its own specific perspective on continuity and change in the United Kingdom.

There is little doubt about fundamental alterations in the second half of the 20th century - Britain has been transformed/has transformed itself from imperial power to US junior partner, from colonial "motherland" to multiethnic society, from "sick man of Europe" to 21st century model economy (until recently), etc. There are, however, competing or contradictory explanations for these changes which we will discuss.

The course is organised as a mixture of lecture and interactive seminar. Most sessions will have an input by myself but also some group and/or individual activity from your side.
