220095 Exploring the History of Global Governance. The African Trusteeships of the League of Nations and the United Nations (1919-1960) (S) (WiSe 2022/2023)

In this methodological seminar we will look at sources on the African Trust Territories that have emerged in connection with their administration by the League of Nations and the United Nations. These include the reports of the respective administrative powers (mostly France and Great Britain) as well as petitions by people from the Trust Territories. In addition to researching digitised sources online, the seminar will focus on how we can use the source material to examine late colonial rule. As part of the debates revolves around the issue of (forced) labour, we will also look at the International Labour Organisation.

The seminar is designed as a research workshop for research-based learning: After an introductory phase, the students are to work in small groups on topics such as petitioning or individual trust areas. They will work out research goals and the working steps on how to achieve their goals in collaborative work. The study performance will also be via shorter texts in German or English on the chosen topic.
The seminar will take place in the new flex seminar room, which allows us to work together in very different ways.
